Job Title: Sr. Instrument Designer

Overall Summary:

  • Senior level, non-supervisory position for the design job family.
  • Independently, performs layout and design work from the basic data supplied.
  • Apply advanced techniques in CAD and standard design applications utilizing this equipment.
  • Self-starter, high motivation and, has the ability to handle stress/constructive feedback, effective leadership skills, and ability to resolve moderately complex engineering/technical problems.
  • Ability to plan, organize and schedule own work with only limited supervision.
  • Performs any other tasks or duties as assigned by supervision, including work at higher or lower levels as needed.

Essential Job Duties and Functions:

  • Candidate shall, work with or without an engineer as needed, to create/design instrument issue for construction drawing package from company or client provided scope.
  • Candidate shall have the ability to understand and create block diagrams, PLC wiring schematics, and instrument installation details. Additional knowledge of electrical one-lines, cable and conduit schedules, and other electrical design is a plus, but not a requirement.

General Functions:

  • Responsible for design/drafting on projects of moderate or large size and complexity with no assistance required. 3D experience is a plus but not a requirement.
  • Has comprehensive knowledge of design/drafting concepts, practices, and procedures.
  • Be able to create scaled and non-scaled plan drawings, have knowledge of revision concepts, title block information, and excellent drafting presentation.
  • May provide guidance to Junior Designers and Designers.
  • Responsible for coordination with other disciplines to gather and distribute required data.
  • May review and check drafting deliverables to ensure final product is accurate and of high quality.
  • Capable of providing complex design solutions on projects.
  • May represent discipline at project meetings.
  • Be able to estimate projects, update Task Registers, update and write project status reports.

Instrument Specific Functions:

  • Size conduit and wire and shall have knowledge of the different type voltages.
  • Shall be able to create a complete construction package from a scope of work, block diagrams, and vendor drawings.
  • Be able to create elementary diagrams.
  • Be able to select standard installation details, make field walk down, and create a scope of work document.
  • Work with engineers to develop design deliverables such as electrical site plans, conduit plans, wiring diagrams, one-line diagrams, control diagrams, motor schematics, PLC layout / termination drawings, wire schedules, lighting panel schedules, electrical equipment installation details, bill of materials, etc.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining instrument CAD standards and library drawings for the Company and assure that the proper design standards are followed on all project drawings.
  • Coordinate with the Lead Designer and other designer disciplines to coordinate drawing development and maintain standards and consistency across project teams.
  • Responsible for knowing client's project standards and making sure the standards are being followed by the electrical design team
  • Attend project meetings internally and with the client as requested by the PE/PM

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 8 years’ experience using AutoCAD to develop instrument drawings.
  • Experienced in developing a Bill of Materials.
  • Able to perform quality work within deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills

Desired Requirements:

  • Knowledge/Skills: Have proficient use of computer aided drafting. Accuracy and fact finding skills.
  • Communication Skills: Communicate effectively both in a written and verbal manner with management and subordinates. Communicate effectively to all related trades as well as to the client.
  • Client Contact: Must have the ability to work with clients to fulfill their project related issues.
